Sign up for a WordCamp London Workshop!

As well as our normal WordCamp London presentations, we are excited to be able to offer two free workshops to WordCamp London attendees, both on 23rd November. Both of these are around WordPress themes.  WordPress Theme Fundamentals, run by Michael Kimb Jones, is aimed at beginners to WordPress theming, while the Theme Team from Automattic will be holding a workshop to teach you how to use the theme customizer.

Both workshops require that you bring your own laptop as well as having WordPress installed locally. You can read more about the requirements on each workshop’s individual page.

Note: you will need a ticket for WordCamp London to attend either workshop.

WordPress Theme Fundamentals

09:30 – 12:45

This course is aimed at beginners to WordPress themes.

If you’ve ever built a website with WordPress, you’ve probably wondered if you should build your own theme. But where do you get started? There are so many tutorials out there, so many courses to be taken, themes to be broken. Whether you want to build a theme from scratch or just learn how to better customise them, this workshop will cover all of the fundamentals that you need to find your way in to WordPress Themes.

The WordPress Theme Customiser

14:00 – 17:30

This course is aimed at advanced themers.

Are you a theme developer that wants to give your users some options, like color schemes or a logo upload? Have you been eyeing the powerful Theme Customizer but don’t know where to start? Are you still creating theme option pages from scratch the old way and don’t know how to transition? Or maybe you’re already using the Customizer, but want to take your options to the next level. If any or all of these apply, then this workshop is for you.

Join a group of wranglers from the Automattic Theme Team in a workshop covering all aspects of the Theme Customizer, from basic implementation to custom controls, sanitization, and transitioning from existing theme option pages. We’ll walk you through examples, building a simple theme with numerous options, and then spend some time answering your questions and giving one-on-one help.

  1. Another request for a timetable please! Would love to come to the afternoon but not without knowing what speakers I’d miss.

  2. Hi Siobhan, thanks for the schedule which is sorting out some confusion in my befuddled ‘Newbie to WP’ mind.
Since I am a WP beginner, I signed up to attend THEME FUNDAMENTALS course but wondered which speakers I’d be missing otherwise.
Do you mind my asking you for some advise here?
As a beginner, have I chosen right course to advance my very basic blogging skills?
    Thank you
    Dinah

    • Hi Dinah!
Taking the Theme Fundamentals workshop in the morning seems like a good idea. Track 1 will be developer focused in the morning, and Track 2 will be on media and then more advanced theming.

In the afternoon there are a number of sessions on content, blogging, and business, so you’ll find those easier to follow than the developer ones in the morning.

      Hope that helps!
      Siobhan

      • Hello again Siobhan,

I think I may have completely misunderstood the concept of WordCamp and which was confirmed by my son who is a web developer and SEO. He looked over the schedule and pointed out to me that it looks, by the schedule titles, very much all about web building and developing and not about actual blogging.

He also looked over the “Topics Overview” of the “WordPress Theme Fundamental”s and said this would be way over my head as again it’s more about web building. So regarding Theme Fundamentals please withdraw my name and offer my place to another.

If he is correct regarding the above – perhaps WordCamp is not for me and I need to withdraw and have my ticket resold to another who may be waiting for a cancellation. I simply want to learn the fundamentals about blogging, how to get it out there and how to eventually improve my skills well enough to write a book.

I look forward to your reply and comments and again thank you for your time in assisting me.

        Kind regards
        Dinah Beaton
